Robin van Persie has spoken out about the moment that Sir Alex Ferguson told his Manchester United players about his plans to retire, and described the Scot's decision to step down as a 'historical moment'.

Van Persie was one of Ferguson's last major signing after 26 years in charge at Old Trafford, and the Dutchman led the way with 26 league goals as the Red Devils claimed their 13th Premier League title under the legendary boss.

Ferguson announced his plans to step down from the hot seat at Old Trafford last month with former Everton boss David Moyes announced as his successor.

Van Persie admitted the news of Ferguson's retirement came as a shock, and revealed just how the 71-year-old told his Manchester United players.

"Sir Alex came through the dressing room door and the first thing he said was that he was retiring," he told the Sun.

"I had to gasp for breath and I shook my head. Had he really said what I thought he'd said?

"The room fell deathly quiet and then everyone became emotional.

"Sir Alex then had a long talk with the squad. I found it a very special speech and felt privileged to have witnessed it.

"It was an historical moment for football, even though I was not happy to hear his message."

Despite the alterations at the top, Van Persie remains confident that nothing will change in terms Manchester United's desire to win silverware.

'It is going to be a new era and a new challenge, with a new manager, maybe some new players coming,' he continued. '[Wilfried] Zaha is coming in from Crystal Palace, maybe some more. Maybe some will leave, nobody knows.

'But it is going to be a new challenge and everybody knows what our standards are: we want to win the league again and then hopefully add one or two trophies to that.'
