What went wrong with England's U21 team?
The woeful performance at the European U21 Championships is a worrying sign for the future
Yes, it was a terrible display by the U21's in the European Championships in Israel and the team really should be achieving higher finishes. However, the display doesn't show all of the problems that the FA need to address.
If you look at some of the other teams in the competition, youngsters from the Senior National Squad were called upon to also play in the U21 European Championships.
However, no English player in the senior squad whatsoever was asked to play in the Championships. The likes of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Tom Cleverley and Danny Welbeck are allowed to play for the U21's still. Then why don't they play?
David Bernstein (chairman of the FA) was recently quoted saying: "If the two clash, then at the end of the day the England senior team simply has to have priority."
Clearly it does as the match against Brazil was only a friendly for the senior team, whilst the U21 European Championships is a major competition.
Therefore, if our young senior squad players were allowed to play in the U21 European Championships, then would England have gone further in the competition?
This is a massive issue that needs to be addressed and if the likes of Chamberlain and Cleverley were available, then yes, England would have gone further.
Furthermore, some of the England U21 players believe they have made it as a top professional already. Some are too big-headed for the fan’s liking and some players aren't striving to become better.
If you look at the England team that was the first team knocked out of the U21 Championships, there are too many average players like Jordan Henderson, Danny Rose, Henri Lansbury etc.
These players are all examples where they have shown much potential for years but haven't become significantly better.
Henderson is the best example, as he was signed for around £16 million from Sunderland to Liverpool. This price tag is way too expensive for a youngster. Ever since joining Liverpool, he hasn't matched the expectation put on him.
There are too many average England players nowadays and this shows in big games. It's lucky we didn't play Spain in the U21 Championships. England would have been ripped apart by the likes of Isco etc.
Nations like Spain, Holland and Germany are expanding their football dominance over England. The FA need to act very quickly if England are going to have a successful future.
