Football has always had a romantic image and appeal to its fans, from the casual to the connoisseur.

The appeal ranges from the meticulous coach screaming passionately from the sidelines, to the cynosure of the majestic winger gliding past helpless defenders.

The sport at its very core is the simplest of games as the main objective is to score more goals than your opponent. Dependent on how deep you want to delve into the game, the facets of its complexities become evident.

As you look deeper in to the tactics of football, you start to notice full backs overlapping, holding midfielders positioning themselves and the trequartistas controlling and dictating the tempo of the game.

With witnessing all of this you begin to realise the essence of the game is expression in its truest form and like in art it is the true innovators who change how we look at and play the game.

The examples of such rare players are Johan Cruyff, Pele, Diego Maradona, Franz Beckenbauer amongst countless others who have graced the finely trimmed blades of grass on a professional football field.

The sport has gone through some extraordinary changes in the last few decades; the level of play is improving at an exponential rate. One of the defining aspects of modern football is the knowledge of the average coach in today's game.

Testament to the ever-changing attitudes of coaches is the rise of Andre Villas Boas, who at the age of sixteen had a disagreement with Sir Bobby Robson's team selection.

After Robson asked the youngster to back up his theory, he thusly demonstrated his point through a series of data and statistics he sent to the illustrious manager. This resulted in Villas Boas being offered a trainee position with the youth team.

The unpredictability, the imagination, the ability and the beauty of watching a side honed as a team unit through undeniable devotion, dedication and passion on the training pitch will grip fans both new and old for years to come.
