Leeds United boss delighted with new signing
Championship news: Leeds manager Brian McDermott has declared his happiness with the signing of striker Matt Smith
Leeds United manager Brian McDermott has revealed he's delighted to have captured the signing of striker Matt Smith.
Smith joins from Oldham Athletic after impressing during their FA Cup run, beating Liverpool and managing a draw with Everton.
He has become the manager's first signing and McDermott is pleased to have signed the striker.
"I'm really pleased," the Leeds boss told the club's official website. "I've known him for a little while. He's come on to the scene in a short space of time, and I like his background, the way he's been brought up, he's done his studying, he went to Oldham, he's played against some big sides and done very, very well."
McDermott has received a reputation for an impressive success rate for developing talent from lower divisions. Dave Kitson and Adam Le Fondre were both snapped up by the manager and have been able to take their careers to the next level and perform in the top flight.
The former Reading manager believes that it's irrelevant what division a player comes from, as long as they've got the ability and desire to achieve things at the club.
"Matt's from a league below and we're looking for someone with potential, who can be better, can play in the team, and who the fans can take to," McDermott added.
"I've got a really good vibe about him. He's not here to sit around and do nothing, he's hungry to do well and achieve. I said we want hungry players to come into the club. They're the players were talking to; players who want to achieve something. There'll be no players coming here who don't have that."
Smith played for many lower league clubs before making a move to Oldham Athletic in 2011. He was the hero during their FA Cup run, scoring against Liverpool twice during their 3-2 scalp and equalised against Everton in the 95th minute to earn a replay in which he also scored in.
