Chelsea have set their sights on Benfica midfielder Nemanja Matic and are prepared to pay €40m to re-sign the former Blues youth player.
The club management aim to splash out this summer as they try to lure the highly-rated Serbia international, who made just two senior league appearances in west London, according to French newspaper Le10Sport.
Matic was a crucial part of the Portuguese team that reached the final of the Europa League, finishing runners-up to Chelsea in Amsterdam last month, and scored four goals overall from defensive midfield this season.
The 24-year-old signed a contract extension lasting to 2018 in January, though he has a release clause of €48m, and the Premier League side have an excellent relationship with Benfica officials.
Chelsea stars David Luiz and Ramires were both signed from the Lisbon club in recent years, with Matic cited as a potential quality addition to the powerful and highly-skilful line-up of west London midfield players.
A world-class striker remains Chelsea's priority, however, and negotiations with several renowned forwards - including Zenit St. Petersburg's Hulk and Edinson Cavani of Napoli - are already believed to be underway.
Yet it seems Jose Mourinho may not be the only man to be returning to Stamford Bridge before the start of next season.
