England U21's in need of reinvigoration
England were eliminated from the European U21 Championships after just two matches
As England's under 21's painfully crashed out of the European Championships on Saturday it had a familiar feel to it.
Disappointment on the international stage is an increasingly worrying open wound that the country has failed to address over the course of the last decade.
The lack of an opportunistic goal threat was problematic for Stuart Pearce's side in the final third of the pitch. A well disciplined Norwegian side clearly exposed and exploited England in Saturday nights horrid result.
Looking back at the pre-expectations of the tournament, it seems as if the team was misjudged as a strong U21 side but bright sparks did appear in the bleak opening two games.
The exuberant, energetic and skilful attributes of Birmingham City's 19-year-old Nathan Redmond where on display and the debutant tried to reignite the creativity in the wings.
Another positive for England fans was Nathaniel Chalobah, at the tender age of 18-years-old the midfielders movement was first class and the loan spell at Gianfranco Zola's Watford undeniably helped his game.
The professionalism of this side should be looked upon with admiration but a disastrous tournament can't be ignored. Fresh ideas need to be implemented into a squad in need of being reinvigorated. Stuart Pearce's time at the helm seems to be drawing to a close and the question that needs to be ask is who can build a squad capable of winning honours with the national pool of players at their disposal?
The success of the Premier League and the apparent impatience and unwillingness to place faith in youth academy prospects has had telling effects on the national side. Change is needed but where should the emphasis be placed? Who is the right choice?
