Mexico continued their disappointing 2014 World Cup qualifying campaign with a 0-0 draw with Costa Rica on Tuesday night.

Angered by their side's failure to add to the three goals El Tri have scored in six group matches so far, home fans at Estadio Azteca began taking their frustration out on opposition captain Bryan Ruiz.

As Ruiz attempted to take a corner in the 78th minute, Mexican supporters proceeded to pelt the Fulham star with bottles and other rubbish, while one fan distracted the set-piece specialist with the use of a laser pen.

One bottle actually hit Ruiz on the head, prompting riot police to storm over to that corner of the stadium in an attempt to calm the situation down.

Play came to a complete standstill while the unsavoury scenes transpired, and there was even a brief scuffle between Mexico and Costa Rica players when confronting the referee about the enforced stoppage.

Mexico now travel to Brazil to take part in the Confederations Cup for the first time since 2005 when they were knocked out on penalties by Argentina in the semi-finals that year.
