Inter Milan's decision to appoint Walter Mazzarri was met with a sense of relief from the club's fans after the disastrous season that unfolded under Andrea Stramaccioni.

The success with Inter Milan's Primavera saw the profile of Stramacionni raised rapidly. The club's hierarchy were intrigued by the fresh  inventiveness, the aggressive tactical approach and where swayed by the young Italian tactician's vision.

The appointment was intended to place a foundation from which to build upon for the Nerazzurri and the task of returning to the forefront of Italian football had begun.

The club wasted no time in showing their ambitions by fortifying and re-energising the centre of the midfielder with the additions of Napoli's Walter Gargano and more importantly Porto's influential Colombian Fredy Guarin.

Optimism was beginning to grow as the board and fans began to increase their expectations for the new season ahead.

The first half of the season had seen Inter performing well with wins against fierce rivals AC Milan in the Milan derby, Fiorentina, Juventus and Napoli. It was impressive and the groundwork for a run at the Scudetto was firmly set.

The second half of the season saw a torrid, exhaustive and gut-wrenching change take its course, destroying the hopes of the club in the process.

An injury crisis had rocked the team seemingly butchering and mutilating what started off as a promising season.

The conclusion of the Serie A season saw the 18-time champions of Italian football banished to an unacceptable effrontery final position of ninth. It is a season that will reside in unfortunate fans memories for years to come.

This disastrous campaign ended with Stramaccioni being relieved of his duties by Massimo Moratti and replaced with Mazzarri.

A major overhaul is expected this coming season as Inter try to forget the embarrassment of last season. Mazzarri brings a wealth of experience, and he managed to finish runners up to eventual champions Juventus with his Napoli side last season.

The collapse of the team has been unbearable for the fans but this summer will symbolise the beginning of an arduous journey to return the club to its rightful place in Italy.
