Arsenal have now gone eight seasons without a trophy.

Their demise has been slow and painful for supporters of the club. With the building of a world-class stadium like the Emirates, Arsenal have had to be very careful with their spending.

Yet with the stadium nearly fully paid off surely now is the perfect time to spend money and become successful once more.

Since the Emirates has been built Arsene Wenger has been called stubborn in his spending. These comments are largely unfair as he has done a incredible job to ensure Champions League football every year without a huge budget to spend on improving the squad.

However, this summer would seem to be the perfect time for him to make truly world-class signings.

Here are a five players Arsenal should sign to help bolster a Gunners title challenge:

1. Robert Lewandowski | Borussia Dortmund

Borussia Dortmund's chief executive has said that Lewandowski will "definitely not be going to Bayern", therefore Arsenal should try too sign him.

He is regularly described as a calm and composed player in the box. He is just as happy to drop deep and link up play, a real team player, which is surely perfect for the Arsenal style of play. As well as the vast multitude of goals he scores he could be a real coup for the club.

2. Alex Song | Barcelona

After enduring a torrid debut season with Barcelona, Alex Song must surely be on Arsenal's radar. Song is admired for his tireless displays in midfield, being able to break up opposition attacks with ease and known to have a eye for a pass.

He knows Arsenal's philosophy well and would slide in with ease should they attempt to sign him whilst bolstering the Gunners' midfield.

3. Luke Shaw | Southampton

After making over 20 appearances for Southampton last season he has drawn many plaudits for the way he has acquitted himself and improved.

Shaw is another product of the Southampton academy, he is quick, good on the ball and surely the obvious choice for England when Ashley Cole is no longer fit for duty. Despite his potential though he could struggle breaking into the first team as the likes of Nacho Monreal and Kieran Gibbs in the squad.

4. Julian Draxler | Schalke

Whilst maybe Draxler has not been mooted for a move to Arsenal as much as he has been rumoured to move to Chelsea, the Bundesliga fans' Player of the Year would improve Arsenal's attacking options significantly.

He is a good dribbler, likes to play the long ball and is quick making him ideal for counter-attacks and for Arsenal's slick passing play. He is mooted to have a €45m release clause, and whilst this is expensive Arsenal do have this sort of money to spend.

5. Mark Schwarzer | Unattached

Many have been surprised by Fulham's decision to release Mark Schwarzer. He had a brilliant season for Fulham last term and still looks on top of his game.

Arsenal attempted to sign him just last year, and if they were to do so this summer he would provide welcome competition to Wojciech Szczęsny, who suffered a lapse in form last season possibly due to him resting on his laurels. This would certainly be a worthwhile free transfer.

If Arsenal were to sign players of the calibre listed above they would have no problem in challenging for the title next season.
