Virginia guard Paul Jesperson has transferred to Northern Iowa, according to Fox Sports.

The 6ft-6-in shooting guard will sit out next season under NCAA rules but will still have two years of college basketball eligibility left.

Northern Iowa coach Ben Jacobson announced the player's decision on Tuesday. Jesperson, who will be a junior next season, started 33 of 35 games for UVA last term.

He averaged five points and two rebounds per game for the Cavaliers. The Merrill, Wisconsin-born star was named the AP Player of the Year during his senior year of high school and was a highly prized recruit coming into college.

Virginia finished the season 23-12 last year, setting a school record with 18 regular season home wins.

But they were knocked out of the NCAA men's basketball tournament at the second round to Florida.

Jesperson's new team, the Northern Iowa Panathers, finished the season with a 21-15 record in the Missouri Valley Confernece - good enough for a third placed finish.

They were knocked out of the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament by Weber State - the eventual runners-up - at the semi-final stage.
