Manchester United 'agree deal' for Benfica defender

Manchester United are set to land Argentine centre back Ezequiel Garay for a fee of £17m, according to reports from Portugal.

The 26-year-old is set to become David Moyes' second signing for Manchester United after the club confirmed the signing of young Uruguayan full-back Guillermo Varela.

Garay was believed close to sign for the English champions in January. The former Real Madrid defender joined Befica in 2011 for a fee of €5.5m.

The Argentine defender would bolster Moyes' defensive options since Rio Ferdinand turns 35 this season, Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and club captain Nemanja Vidic have all faced spells on the sidelines in recent seasons.

Garay's move to the Premier League could benefit the defender's chances of making it to the Argentina squad for the 2014 World Cup finals.

Garay has played a vital role for the Lisbon giants for the past couple of years and could prove to be a great addition for Moyes, who hopes to retain the Premier League title for Manchester United in his debut season at Old Trafford.
