AC Milan striker Robinho is reportedly close to a return to Brazil with former club Santos the favourites for his signature.

Robinho spent three years with the Brazilian giants prior to joining Real Madrid in 2005, where he made 147 appearances, scoring 61 goals, making him a hero back home.

The former Manchester City attacker has failed to commit his future to AC Milan, intensifying the rumours that he could be close to returning home.

Robinho found himself on the fringes of the Milan squad last season, with the signing of Mario Balotelli further pushing him out of the team.

Coach Massimiliano Allegri restricted the Brazilian to only 23 Serie A appearances last season and, although the Brazilian still has one year left on his contract, Milan may cut their losses now rather than risk losing their player on a free transfer next season.

Santos vice-president Odilio Rodrigues is confident that his team can negotiate a deal for their former star.

"Santos don't know what value AC have set, but we should get the answer to that question  as soon as this week," Rodrigues told Brazilian reporters.

"We will work based on what Milan and the player demand. We will then transmit information to the club's board and depending on the value they will decide if singing him is feasible. But I believe it is."
