Chelsea confirm Bundesliga star deal
Chelsea transfer news: Blues wrap up deal for Andre Schürrle from Bayer Leverkusen
Chelsea have confirmed they have reached a deal with Bayer Leverkusen for Andre Schürrle, subject to a medical and personal terms being agreed.
The Blues have been in persuit of the young German international for some time, but finally announced they had concluded the deal today. The fee is believed to be in the region of £20 million.
"Chelsea and Bayer Leverkusen have reached an agreement for the transfer of André Schürrle, subject to the completion of legal documentation and related matters, including personal terms and passing a medical," read a club statement.
It had been initially suggested that Chelsea midfielder Kevin de Bruyne could be used as part of the deal - however Leverkusen have announced they have signed Heung Min-Son on a five-year deal from Hamburg instead.
"We made it clear from the start that a transfer of Schürrle to Chelsea would only happen if an adequate sporting alternative was possible," said club chairman Wolfgang Holzhaeuser.
"This alternative was now taken under contract with Son Heung-min and so there is nothing blocking Andre Schürrle's transfer from our side."Schürrle becomes the first player to sign for Chelsea since Jose Mourinho returned to take over the club last week.
The Blues are expected to spend big this summer, and have been linked with moves for Napoli forward Edinson Cavani and Benfica's Nemanja Matic.
