Arsenal and Tottenham have missed out on the signing of Son Heung-Min after the highly-rated South Korea international was confirmed as a Bayer Leverkusen player on Thursday.

Son joins Bayer Leverkusen from Hamburg as a replacement for German forward Andre Schurrle, who is set to join Chelsea after the Blues agreed a reported £20 million fee for his capture.

"We made it clear from the start that a transfer of Schurrle to Chelsea would only happen if an adequate sporting alternative was possible," Leverkusen president Wolfgang Holzhaeuser said.

"This alternative was now taken under contract with Son Heung-Min and so there is nothing blocking Andre Schurrle's transfer from our side."

The 20-year-old scored 12 goals in the Bundesliga for Hamburg last season, and a number of impressive displays led to speculation that Son would make the move to the Premier League at the end of the campaign.

Arsenal and Tottenham had both been credited with interest in Son as both Arsene Wenger and Andre Villas-Boas look to bolster their attacking options during the summer transfer window.

Son is not the only player claimed to have been on the radar of both Arsenal and Tottenham, with the north London rivals also reported to be pursuing Real Madrid forward Gonzalo Higuain.

David Villa of Barcelona has also been touted as a potential target for the Gunners and Spurs.
