Australia coach Holger Osiek has talked himself into trouble after being caught on camera making a joke comment about women.
The former West Germany assistant had just seen his side earn a convincing 4-0 win over Jordan in a World Cup qualifier, with Lucas Neil scoring his first goal for his country.
But, before the boss got to answer questions on the performance, he managed to put his foot his mouth with comments that are sure to go down with the ladies of Oz.
“You push me around like my wife,” he’s initially heard saying to reporters clamouring around a table at his post-match press conference.
“There is a saying…women should shut up in public.”
Quickly realising the error of his ways, Osiek then attempts to make a joke out of the situation. Unfortunately for him, the damage was already done.
“Now you’ve recorded that I am going to be the darling of all Australian wives.”
Osieck has since apologised for his comments, insisting it was a complete misunderstanding and a remark that wasn’t supposed to be taken seriously.
"I got information it created waves. That was not the intent. To everyone offended, I sincerely apologise. It was off the record and ... a complete misunderstanding ... it was more meant as a joke. There was no seriousness in it,” he’s subsequently told SBS.
"We shouldn't take any remark (like this) literally."
