Tottenham are closing in on the signing of Corinthians' Brazil international midfielder Paulinho, according to the Metro.

Spurs appear to have looked for an alternative option after the club's proposal for Inter Milan's Fredy Guarin was rejected.

The 24-year-old, who is expected to cost around £14.5m, operates as a holding midfielder for Corinthians and has seen his stock rapidly increase after impressing during the club's triumph in last year's World Club Championship.

This would be a transfer that would give Spurs remarkable strength in the position, as Paulinho would partner fellow Brazilian Sandro in the middle.

In relation to recent reports this is an area of the team that Andre Villas-Boas is desperately trying to upgrade with Jake Livermore's future looking in doubt - and it could be seen as a vital piece if the team looks to continue its progression.

Their progression could rest on what they manage to do in the transfer market this summer with the aforementioned defensive midfielder and a striker urgent priorities.
