Chelsea likely to sign Dutch starlet, says Overmars
Chelsea news: Ajax general manager Marc Overmars admits that Marco van Ginkel looks set to move to Stamford Bridge
Netherlands starlet Marco van Ginkel has moved one step closer to a move to Europa League winners Chelsea after Ajax claimed that they could not compete with the financial power of the Blues, according to the Daily Mirror.
The 20-year-old caught the eye of Chelsea scouts last year as he produced a series of impressive performances on the way to earning the coveted 'Dutch Talent of the Year' award. Past winners include Gregory van der Wiel, Robin van Persie, Clarence Seedorf and former Chelsea trio Salomon Kalou, Arjen Robben and Bolo Zenden.
The midfielder, rated at around £8.5m by current club Vitesse, also caught the attention of Eredivisie champions Ajax, but general manager Marc Overmars confessed: "We cannot beat Chelsea's financial resources".
He added: "Ajax were very interested in Van Ginkel and we were willing to go quite far. But if we have to compete with one of the big clubs in England it is always going to be difficult for us."
New Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is thought to be a great admirer of the rising star, who made his one and only appearance for Holland as a substitute against Germany in November, and made his signing one of his priorities upon his arrival.
The club have also confirmed that a deal is in place for Germany forward Andre Schurrle and are still thought to be in pursuit of strikers Edinson Cavani, Robert Lewandowski and Mario Gomez.
