Mathew Macklin heads into his fight with Gennadiy Golovkin with a record of 29 wins and four losses.
Macklin is a good fighter who can mix it with any of the best in the Middleweight division. He has been in the ring and competed well with Felix Sturm and Sergio Martinez but come up short both times. Macklin is an experienced campaigner with great determination and a brilliant chin. He has been able to take shots that would simply have knocked most other guys out.
Golovkin in comparison comes into the fight with a perfect record of 26 fights and 26 wins. Golovkin has 23 knock outs to his name showing his phenomenal punch power. 23 knock outs from 26 fights means that he currently has the best knock out rate ever in middleweight championship history. With a knock out percentage of 88% he also has the best rate of any active current and former champion.
These are truly incredible statistics that highlight just how tough an opponent he is going to be for Macklin. As well as his power, Golovkin has also never been knocked down or out in more than 375 fights whether that be as an amateur or a professional. I can't even describe how amazing that it.
To have never even been knocked down is just unheard of!
Golovkin is the current WBA and IBO middleweight champion and had a very impressive amateur career including Golds at the World Championships. Asain Games and Asian Championships. He also holds a silver medal at the 2004 Olympics.
He holds victories over the likes of Andy Lee, Lucien Bute and Andre Direll as an amateur. All this amateur success tells you a few things, that he is technically very good and knows how to win.
I expect this fight to be a real cracker of a fight with two boxers who like to dominate going forward and attacking. Macklin will look to force Golovkin back and put him under constant pressure. Golovkin with his greater boxing ability will look to combine this with his huge power and land great shots on Macklin who isn't technically the best. I expect this fight to be very entertaining but very tough for Macklin to win.
Some are suggesting that all the wars that Macklin has been involved in may start to have an effect on him and that he wont be able to keep on taking all the punishment that he has been used to so far in his career. Macklin will go into the ring and as always give it absolutely everything that he has got but for my money will come up short again.
Golovkin looks like a real star to me who can go on from this fight and become one of the pound for pound best fighters. His power is incredible and for me he is the best middleweight out there. If Golovkin does win then there are so many exciting fights out there against the likes of Sergio Martinez, Julio Chavev Jr, Martin Murray or even Darren Barker.
The middleweight division is full of talent and I expect Golovkin to reign supreme as the King of the division for a fair few years to come. Gennady Golovkin watch out for this name, he is going to be a superstar!
