Simon Zebo targets Test spot for Lions
British & Irish Lions news: Simon Zebo wants to earn test place
Simon Zebo will be looking to put his name in the frame for a test spot when he makes his British & Irish Lions debut against the New South Wales Waratahs tomorrow (Saturday).
The Ireland wing received a late call-up to Warren Gatland’s squad as cover for George North and Tommy Bowe, and will instantly get a chance to shine on the opposite flank to Sean Maitland.
Alex Cuthbert is regarded as a certain selection against Australia, but tomorrow’s starting speedsters could go head-to-head for the other spot in the first Test match if North and Bowe fail to recover in time.
Zebo recognises that this could be a once in a lifetime opportunity down under, and is eager to take advantage.
"Any chance you get to represent the Lions you must do it with pride and put your best foot forward," Zebo told the press early on Friday.
"These series don't come around too often, so it is an opportunity for all 23 players involved. It is my first run-out but like all the other lads, getting to wear that special red jersey is an honour and a great opportunity.
"It has just been nothing but excitement ever since I got out here. I've had a bit of work catching up on sleep but I am getting there.”
The 23-year-old, who can also play at full-back if required, is expecting a physical clash against the Waratahs, and is looking forward to testing himself against some of the Wallabies stars – who have been released especially to play in the fixture.
"I am expecting a tough physical game on Saturday. The Waratahs have one or two players back from the Wallabies and they will be out to get one over the Lions. It's going to be tough, and a hard 80 minutes, but it should be exciting,” he concluded.
