Lionel Messi surpassed Diego Maradona on Argentina’s all-time top goalscorers list last night as his hat-trick against Guatemala took his tally to 35 for the Albiceleste.

The Barcelona ace opened the scoring with a sublime curled effort from 25-yards before adding his second and his team’s third from the penalty spot following Augusto Fernandez’s header.

The icing on the cake came just a few minutes after half-time when Messi stroked home from inside the penalty area – a strike which put him one clear of Maradona and level with fellow Argentinian legend Hernan Crespo on the all-time list.

The 25-year-old now requires 21 goals to become his country’s all-time leading goalscorer – a position currently held by Gabriel Batistuta.

Check out his sensational opener and his hat-trick below!
