Since arriving at Old Trafford in 2007, Luis Nani has spent season after season striving to fulfil his world-class potential, yet has failed in doing so.
Glimpses of his talent have given an insight into what the 26-year-old Portuguese winger is capable of, notably his exceptional solo goal against Arsenal in 2010, which raised a few eyebrows.
However, those glimpses are exactly that, and they have never prolonged into form or great season performances, hence United's recent negotiation war with affluent Galatasaray - which the Turkish club have appeared to exclude themselves from any further bidding for the winger.
It seems a move could be on the horizon for Nani, with hot England prospect Wilfried Zaha joining the club this season.
However it's the valuation, of around £8.5m, which United put on Nani that is surprising for someone of his potential - a player that many saw as the next Cristiano Ronaldo.
With other wingers Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young also having injury worries and poor 2012/13 season, Nani could still be part of the long-term set up of David Moyes' side.
Yet with other title challengers such as Manchester City and Chelsea strengthening their squad already with high-class talent - Jesus Navas and Andre Schurrle, respectively - it seems Nani, who was absent nearly the whole of last season through injury, could act as a new signing for United.
If he can stay high on confidence and keep fit, Nani can add flair to United's line-up and prove his potential.
Whatever the price, letting Nani go could be costly for United.
