Neymar: The wrong signing for Barcelona

Published 14 Comments

After the humiliating 7-0 aggregate defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League semi-finals it was obvious what was missing in the Spanish side's talented squad.

That's strong, inspirational, tough tackling defenders.

But instead, the Catalans have opted for the skinny, skilful striker/winger in Neymar.

Neymar is one of the world's most talked about players and rightly so. His effortless superiority on the ball, combined with his electric pace makes him a nightmare for defenders.

But you may or may not of heard of a similar player already at Barcelona, Lionel Messi - he's not a bad player.

Having the two, Neymar and Messi, in the same squad is an exciting prospect but it will also cause problems. Tito Villanova will have the difficult task of getting them both into the team. Perhaps against lesser teams the two can combine and destroy weaker opponents, but against teams such Bayern Munich, fitting in both of these talents will prove extremely difficult.

Neymar has the potential to be something special but he may also end up like Robinho,  who had loads of talent but was never really able to produce on the big stage. When was the last time you saw Neymar play well against a real top side? I can't remember either. Scoring a lot of goals in Brazil is all well and good but doing it in Europe is much tougher.

With the current set of defenders at the Nou Camp, the side simply will not be able to cope with teams as good as Bayern or Dortmund. PSG and AC Milan would have beaten Barca had it not been for the best in player in the world Lionel Messi coming to the rescue for the umpteenth time.

Buying someone like Thiago Silva, Mats Hummels or Vincent Kompany would be a much wiser thing to do considering last season's semi-final embarrassment.

Even adding an aggressive tackling midfielder would have improved the sides defensive frailty.

Hopefully they won't make the same mistake they've made over the last two years and will buy a couple of good defenders.
