Chelsea have made a bid in the region of £15 million for former Watford loanee, Matej Vydra – according to Italian source, TuttoMercato.
The forward arrived at Watford last summer on loan from Udinese, along with several of his teammates from his parent club. He would make 48 appearances for the Hertfordshire-based club – achieving 22 goals and being credited with six assists.
His fine performances at Watford saw him receive the 2012/13 Championship Player of the Season award.
Despite this, the season ultimately ended in disappointment – with Gianfranco Zola’s side failing to clinch Premier League promotion after playoff final defeat to Crystal Palace.
The 21-year-old began his career in the Czech Republic’s second division with Vysocina Jihlava. Here, he achieved five goals in 27 appearances.
He then spent six months at Banik Ostrava in the Czech first division – scoring four times in 14 appearances – before moving to his current club, Udinese.
For Udinese, he has only made two appearances and was first loaned to Club Brugge – making only one appearance due to injury – before making his mark in the Npower Championship.
Vydra has also got two goals – both of which came against Armenia – in seven caps for the Czech Republic.
The link between the Czech international and Chelsea may come as a shock to many.
However, Vydra has a lot of potential and Jose Mourinho may be looking to invest in Chelsea’s future. This could see Romelu Lukaku and Vydra making their marks as Chelsea greats in a few years but for now, they would have to settle for substitute appearances or loans to other clubs.
Vydra’s pace and clinical ability in front of goal will no doubt serve Chelsea well and, along with The Blues, it can be expected that several other teams may try to acquire the young man’s signature.
The only issue that arises, from the potential buy, is that Udinese are expecting a fee closer to £20 million – rather than Chelsea’s initial bid of around £15m.
