Manchester City has appointed Manuel Pellegrini as their new manager, replacing Roberto Mancini after the team missed out on silverware last season.
The Chilean has promised to bring attractive football to the Etihad and start a new cycle. But can he bring important titles to City in a short period of time?
Bringing home the Premier League title after 44 years in the 2011/12 season, failing to win a silverware last season cost Mancini the job.
One of the biggest reasons is the poor result in the recent editions of the Champions League. City have only acclaimed three wins in the last 12 games in Europe’s premier competition, and were knocked out of the competition in group stage two years running.
This is definitely unacceptable for a team with such huge investment going in to the squad. Pellegrini’s most important task will be winning the Europe’s elite competition.
The Chilean is a suitable candidate for City in this aspect. He has a achieved good results in Europe – guiding middle-sized clubs Villareal and Malaga to semi and quarter-finals respectively. With City’s luxurious squad in hand, he is expected to challenge for the trophy.
The implementation of his philosophy is one important factor that would decide the successfulness of his spell. He had a miserable 2009/10 campaign in Real Madrid because the club hierarchy ignored his ideas, as he told El Mercurio in an interview. Some of his players whom he regarded as important were sold.
Pellegrini’s attractive football style and tactical system need to be supported in City if they are to win something big.
