Arsenal Football Club announced recently that they have appointed a new chairman at the club after ex-chairman Peter Hill-Wood decided to step-down from his role.

The club released a statement on the 14th June revealing that the new chairman is Sir Chips Keswick.

Hill-Wood has been the chairman at Arsenal since 1982, but has chosen to step-down after suffering a heart-attack last year.

The north-London based football club has been in the Hill-Wood family since 1927 as before Peter, it was his father, Denis Hill-Wood, who was the club's chairman and before him, it was Sir Samuel Hill-Wood, so the decision to step-down was a tough one to take by Peter.

Talking to the official club website, Hill-Wood said: “This has been a difficult decision as Arsenal Football Club has been a huge part of my life. Although I am feeling better I feel this is the right time for me to stand down. I would like to thank our majority owner, Stan Kroenke, for the respectful and dignified way he has handled this. I know Sir Chips is the right person to take the club forward.”

It was 1962 when Peter joined the Arsenal board and that was in the period of his father being the club's chairman.

Since '62, Peter Hill-Wood has been at the heart of Arsenal Football Club and has played massive parts in big-club decisions, including the move away from Highbury to the Emirates Stadium.

The club's majority stake-holder, Stan Kroenke has been talking to the club's website as well and he has paid his respect to Hill-Wood. He said: “Peter has been a wonderful custodian of this club.

“He has been a member of the Arsenal board for 51 years and his vision and steadfastness have been central to the successes of this great club over that time.

“Peter will be sorely missed but we will recognise his many contributions to the Club in an appropriate way.”

Kroenke also took the time to comment on the appointment of Sir Chips:

“Firstly, I am sad to see Peter standing down due to his health and we all hope he continues well in his recovery.

“The Hill-Wood family has made an extraordinary contribution to Arsenal over many decades. They have been central to the club’s many achievements during this time".

The life-long Arsenal fan has been on the board since 2005 and he has commented on his delight at being appointed as the club's chairman.

“I am greatly honoured to have been appointed chairman of Arsenal Football Club. This is one of the great clubs in the game, recognised and loved by millions. I am looking forward to leading the club to future success.”
