Hannah Barnes has been reinstated as the winner of the IG London Nocturne after originally being given second place in controversial circumstances.

Barnes won the race on a photo finish but the win was originally awarded to Laura Trott after Barnes was deducted one place for dangerous riding as she celebrated around other riders.

However, a review by British Cycling saw Barnes given the victory.

The statement from British Cycling read: “Race officials have reviewed the sanction imposed on Hannah Barnes. The sanction has been moderated from relegation to a reprimand.”

It means that Barnes has now won the event for three years running, this year coming ahead of double Olympic champion Trott, and another Brit in Dani King.

The IG London Nocturne organisers originally gave Trott the win before announcing that Barnes was in the lead at the finish.

Barnes was given the one place penalty for celebrating while close to riders who were in the process of being lapped but the remarkable u-turn came after protests from Barnes’ team.
