Six young footballers and the father of one of the boys have been found guilty of manslaughter in a Dutch court after knocking over a linesman and kicking him to death.

Judges sentenced the 50-year-old man to six years in jail for manslaughter for his part in the death of Richard Nieuwenhuizen, who was acting as a linesman during the youth game in December. Nieuwenhuizen was the father of a player in the opposing team.

Five of the teenagers were given two-year sentences in a youth detention facility by judges in Lelystad for their part in the tragedy.

A 6th boy was sentenced to a year in a youth detention facility, while a 7th player was sentenced to 30 days' detention for assault.

Richard Nieuwenhuizen was attacked after a match between junior Dutch teams SC Buitenboys and Nieuw Sloten in December. Although he was able to get to his feet after being attacked, he died in hospital the next day.

Mr Nieuwenhuizen's widow, Xandra, said after the verdict: "This verdict gives us some kind of closure".

A judge said when handing down his verdict: "The conclusion is that the violence the suspects committed is the reason for Nieuwenhuizen's death".
