Five of the worst: Football appointments (5)

Joe Kinnear

Football News

Joe Kinnear's brief stint as Newcastle manager was not a failure per se, but it was comical at best, farcical at worst and, ultimately, utterly baffling.

Boardroom meddling led to the departure of 'King' Kevin Keegan from the role he had emotionally retaken just nine months before and, somehow, Kinnear was identified as his ideal successor.

Kinnear's first press conference included a breathtaking verbal assault on a number of journalists, during which he dropped copious c-words and f-bombs like they were going out of fashion.

His last job had been with Nottingham Forest five years before - where he lasted less than a year - and his brash style at Newcastle unsettled some of his players, most notably Charles N'Zogbia - with Kinnear even publicly forgetting his name.

Kinnear was forced to relinquish his position after undergoing a triple-heart-bypass in February, while Newcastle were relegated at the end of the season.
