Sunderland look set to lose their most prized asset Simon Mignolet, who is expected to complete a move to Liverpool this summer and Kieren Westwood seems to be the man to replace him at the Stadium of Light.
Mignolet has many admirers and has been extensively linked with Arsenal and Liverpool but it seems he's joining the latter. The Belgian has been in inspired form for Sunderland and helped them in their fight for survival in the 2012/13 season.
However, for Westwood, he has only had a handful of appearances for the Black Cats, but is expected to be given a chance to prove himself and become Sunderland’s first-choice goalkeeper.
The Irishman has only played 12 times for Sunderland - four of them in the League Cup and he has been dropped by Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni this past year. He was expected to become the long term number one for Ireland following the retirement of Shay Given but barley featured this season as Milwall’s David Forde has taken up the jersey.
With Westwood is currently at Sunderland it will mean Paolo Di Canio will not need to buy a replacement as Westwood is ready to make the step up and deserves his opportunity to shine in the Premier League.
It may be a big season for the 28-year-old, who will want to be regular starter for his club and push his way into the Ireland side ahead of the World Cup.
