In the World Cup of 2010, Germany had been dealt a severe blow, their inspirational captain, Michael Ballack, was injured just before the start of the premier tournament in the world of football.

The man to don his number was a young 20-year-old boy who had just lost a Champions League final with Bayern Munich, Thomas Muller.

You watch him play and there's nothing that really grabs your attention, he's fast but nothing in comparison to Robben, Ronaldo and others, by his own admission he's incapable of trickery,he rarely beats his man with mazy runs and isn't the best poacher.

The current German squad is blessed with creative, technically gifted youngsters, there's Mesut Ozil, Mario Gotze Toni Kroos, Juliun Draxler, Marco Reus, Lewis Holtby, Gundogan, Andrei Schurrle and many others.

Thomas Muller isn't anywhere near them when it comes to pure technique, neither does he have the vision of Toni Kroos nor the dribbling of Gotze nor is he as fast as Reus or Draxler but in-spite of all this ever since Louis Van Gaal gave him a chance in the main team as a 19-year-old, he has been a regular for both Bayern and Germany, the keyword here is efficiency.

As a footballer your primary aim should be winning at all costs, it's not tennis or athletics where individual brilliance is awarded, it's a team game and Thomas Muller is a perfect team player with a higher footballing IQ than almost any player on this planet.

He called himself a space architect, a player whose more interested in creating spaces for himself and his team mates instead of trying to leave his marker for dead and get a standing ovation from the crowd.

Getting back to 2010, a young German squad with most players playing their first major tournament was up against the English side starring the likes of Gerrard Lampard and Wayne Rooney, on paper  there was no comparison take out Lahm Schweinsteiger and Klose and none of the German players were even remotely recognisable outside Germany.

The result roared a different story, Germany annihilated England 4-1 with Thomas Muller scoring a brace. He went on to score a goal against Messi's Argentina when Ze Germans knocked the Albiceleste out of the Park 4-0.

They lost the semis to Spain but Thomas Muller was absent from that tie, he came back to score another goal against Uruguay as Germany came from behind to beat them and get the third Place. With five goals and three assists he was the most productive player in his very first World Cup winning both the Golden Boot and Young Player of the tournament.

Last year in the Champions League final he was the one who scored what should have been a winning goal for Bayern and it was only after he was replaced that Bayern dramatically lost the final.

This year he has been Bayern's main penalty taker and he hasn't missed even once scoring a very important penalty against Lille in the group stage and a penalty in DFB Pokal final as well.

Not only did he shine in the World Cup, ever since he has been drafted into the Bayern main team he has played three finals with Bayern winning once, he has been a part of Treble winning Bayern something even Beckenbauer and Gerd Muller never achieved.

Not only has he been a part of the treble winning team he has been their Top Scorer and their 2nd highest assist provider. He has been involved in the most number of goals in Bundesliga directly and indirectly and scored goals against Arsenal in the round of 16 followed by Juventus in the quarters and then went on to embarrass the mighty Catalans as Bayern hammered them 4-0 with Thomas Muller scoring twice and assisting once before scoring yet another goal as Bayern bulldozed Barcelona at Nou Camp 3-0.

At just 23-years-old, he has more World Cup goals than Messi Ronaldo Rooney and RVP combined, has scored in every round of Champions League, won a historic treble, played three Champions League finals, won a Golden Boot and scored in DFB Pokal final.

The lack of flamboyance in his game might cost him the Baloon D'or, but if there is one player who deserves to win it this year purely on the basis of merit it's him a leading Footballing Journalist said, there's only one thing predictable about Thomas Muller and that is that he will always deliver when you need him to.

It's about time to recognise a player who scores important goals, lifts his game when it's needed, runs like a player with multiple lungs and creates opportunities for his team and more than anything plays for his team's glory.
