Aston Villa set for new era
Aston Villa opinion: Paul Lambert is leading the Villans in the right direction
After a struggle to survive last season Aston Villas will be looking to push on and have made their intentions clear by already signing highly rated defender Jores Okore from Danish club FC Nordsjaelland.
The 20-year-old, who signed for a reported fee of £4 million, joins a very young squad who despite being involved in a relegation battle for most of the season have impressed pundits.
Especially their star striker Christian Benteke who finished the season fourth top scorer with 19 goals which, for a club struggling to survive is very impressive.
Aston Villa have never been relegated from the Premier League and are one of the most respected clubs in English football. Last season was disappointing by the clubs standards but the youth coming through the side is very promising and they will hope not to be in the position they were last season again.
Scottish manager Paul Lambert deserves a lot of credit for adopting the philosophy of bringing through of host of young players into the side. Even when times were tough and the results were slacking the manager showed faith in his side and didn’t change his beliefs.
It’s not just at first team level where the young players have impressed. Villa won the next gen series, the Champions League for u19s defeating fellow Premier League club Chelsea in the final. The tournament includes some of the finest clubs across Europe including Barcelona, Juventus, PSG and Ajax who were all Champions in their native country.
This is a very promising sign for the club and their fans who will hope to see some of these players progress into the first team in the future.
If the club can hold off interest for big players which is sure to come there is no reason why Villa can’t build on last season and even finish in the top 10. There is more than enough talent in the squad and with a determined manager things are only looking good for the club from Birmingham.
