Tottenham announce Baldini as new Technical Director

Tottenham have confirmed Franco Baldini as their new Technical Director.

The Italian joins Spurs having left his former job as general manager with Roma this summer. He was also Fabio Capello's assistant during his spell as England manager between 2008 and 2012.

In statement on Tottenham's website this morning, chairman Daniel Levy said: "Franco is extremely well respected in the industry, possessing an extensive knowledge of players around the world.

"He will strengthen our football management team, particularly in the field of recruitment, working closely with Andre Villas-Boas and Tim Sherwood across all levels on the playing side."

Spurs have a chequered past in appointing technical directors and directors of football, however the fact manager Andre Villas-Boas backs Baldini's appointment could be key to success this time around.

"The chairman and I have been outlining the route ahead for what we want to do in terms of the club structures and, hopefully, the arrival of somebody else in the structure for the recruitment side – a technical director," Villas-Boas said last month. "Hopefully we can take those steps forward. It's not up to me to confirm anything.

"The most important thing is the relationship between the person that bridges the gap between manager and board, and that he is able to be focused on the technical side of things. [It should be] someone who has experience of dressing rooms, represents the club, and is able to link up with players and agents."

Baldini is expected to play a key role in Tottenham's approach to the transfer market this summer.

Spurs, who missed out on Champions League qualification by a single point to rivals Arsenal despite a record Premier League tally, have been linked with a host of players in recent weeks.

A raid on Brazilian football seems likely when the transfer window opens, with Corinthians' Paulinho, Atletico Mineiro's Bernard and Internacional's Leandro Damiao all said to be on the north London club's radar.

Tottenham have also been linked with a move for Miralem Pjanic, who is currently at Baldini's former club Roma.
