Premier League 2013/14: Opening day predictions

Published 3 Comments

With the 2012/13 Premier League campaign in the history books, it is now time to look forward to the 2013/2014 season and it's first-step was completed today by announcing the fixture list for every English club in all the leagues.

This morning at 9am all the clubs learnt their fate and found out where they will be travelling too or facing on the opening day of the new campaign.

With the random selection of the fixtures, sometimes it throws up a one-sided affair and sometimes it will throw up an absolute cracker, so this year, we thought we would look into who has the easiest fixture for the opening day.

For me personally, no Premier League fixture is easy anymore, especially when it's opening day as no-one knows how a team will perform, but for this article, I am going to do it on how the teams look on paper.

I will be predicting who I think will win their opening day fixtures, who will struggle and who will settle for a point in the opening game.
So lets get going through the opening-day fixtures.

Arsenal Vs Aston Villa

So the opening game for Arsene Wenger and his men is at home to Villa, who only just survived in the Premier League last season.

However the experience the young-side picked up along the way will certainly help them out, but an away trip to the Emirates Stadium is not easy for any-team, so I have to give three points to Arsenal.

Arsenal to WIN

Chelsea Vs Hull

Jose Mourinho's return to English football and return to Stamford Bridge couldn't get much easier to be honest (No offence to Hull City).

Chelsea will host newly-promoted Hull at home and should easily pick up their first three-points of the season.

Chelsea to WIN

Crystal Palace Vs Tottenham

Going away to a newly-promoted team on the opening day of the season is a tough ask fo any side and it's a challenge that Andre Villas-Boas will have to face with Spurs.

It will be interesting to see how Tottenham bounce back after last year's disappointment of missing out on Champions League football and it will also be vital to see whether or not they can keep Gareth Bale.

Tough game, but Spurs should win.

Tottenham to WIN (Just)

Liverpool Vs Stoke

Stoke is a tough game for anybody whether it be home or away and it will also be interesting to see how Mark Hughes gets on coaching the side.

At home, Liverpool should really be winning these types of games, but I can see the points being shared here in a tightly-fought draw.

Manchester City Vs Newcastle United

Roberto Mancini gone and Manuel Pelligrini in. Signings coming in for City and more money is there to be spent, so it could be another fruitful year for the ex-champions as they look to win back the title from Manchester United.

As for Newcastle, the re-appointment of Joe Kinnear into the club has sparked worry amongst fans and they believe it could be a long season and unfortunately for them, it will start with no point.

Manchester City to WIN

Norwich City Vs Everton

Tough one to predict this as they are both unpredictable teams.

City in a relegation scrap all season and then finished 11th? And Everton without David Moyes and potentially Leighton Baines and Marouane Fellaini?

Very tough to call, but I am going to give it as a home win.

Norwich City to WIN

Sunderland Vs Fulham

Another really tricky one to predict.

Sunderland were in a relegation scrap all season and Fulham were coasting in safety for half of the campaign.

How will Di Canio get on in his first full season at Stadium of Light?

I will put this one down as a draw.

Swansea City Vs Manchester United

Not where you would want to start your title defence or your first season after taking over from Sir Alex Ferguson.

One of the hardest places to go in the Premier League and Swansea will put up a good fight against the champions, but I still think United will have enough.

Manchester United to win

West Brom Vs Southampton

Great season for both clubs last year, but I don't think this season will be as rosy for West Brom.

They have lost Romelu Lukaku as he has re-joined Chelsea and he will be a big blow for the club.

As for Southampton, thoroughly enjoyed watching them near the end of last season and I think they could do well this year.

Southampton to WIN

West Ham Vs Cardiff City

Newly promoted side up against a solid Premier League outfit. Hard to call.

For me, Cardiff don't have a strong enough team to survive in the Premier League (and neither do Hull or Palace), and I think their Premier League dream will kick off with a defeat at Upton park.

West Ham to WIN

So there we have it.

Looking at the fixture-list, I believe Chelsea and Arsenal have the nicest opening-day fixtures and for me, United have a horrible start in their title defence.

Those are my opening day predictions, please feel free to comment whether you agree or disagree.

Also write your own predictions so I can see what you think as well.

Below you can also see my final league standings prediction!

1. Chelsea

2. Manchester City

3. Manchester United

4. Arsenal

18. Crystal Palace.

19. Cardiff City

20. Hull City
Sorry promoted-teams.
