The announcement that Gavin ‘The Rock’ Rees and Anthony ‘Million Dollar’ Crolla are to face each other is exciting news.
Rees has a record of 37 wins two losses and one draw which is an impressive record. Rees is a good, experienced former world champion at light-welterweight and recently come off a very brave performance against one of the future stars of the sport Adrien Broner.
Rees took some big shots and had prepared meticulously but Broner just looked too big, too strong and too quick for Rees. The fight with Crolla should be much easier for Rees as Crolla is nowhere near the level of Broner. That is no insult to Crolla as Broner is an elite level fighter.
Crolla is a busy fighter who is technically good but can sometimes get involved in tear-ups when he should look to use his skill more. His last fight with Derry Mathews (a former Rees victim) was scored as a draw. Personally I thought that Crolla had edged it.
This has left his record standing at 25 wins, four losses and one draw. Crolla is four inches taller than Rees which could prove to be a significant factor in their fight. Crolla can use his height and skill to keep Rees at a distance and dominate the fight. Rees on the other hand will look to get on the inside and pepper Crolla.
Rees is used to having to fight bigger men so it will be nothing new for him and will be well equipped for the fight. The winner is expected to get a fight against fellow Brit and world champion Ricky Burns. Burns is a top boxer who is yet to receive the credit that he deserves as a two-weight world champion.
I see Rees winning this fight with his vast experience and going on to another shot at the world title. Rees is an admirable character who goes about his business quietly and without much controversy. For these reasons I would like to see Rees win.
