Lewis Holtby is a player who has technical ability and passing precision is of the highest calibre, enabling him to control a game and play the defence-splitting pass.

After moving the Premier League in January, I feel we saw glimpses of what this player is capable of - but this coming season we should really see the player’s true ability.

The move to bring him in in January rather than wait until the summer to gain him on a free transfer could be a stroke of genius by Andre Villas-Boas. Although Holtby came from a top European league, in the form of the Bundesliga, the Premier League is completely different in terms of the pace at which the game is played and the physicality of the challenges.

A lot of foreign imports take time to get up to the speed of the league and adapt. However, for Holtby gaining the experience of playing Premier League for around four to five months of last season will have enabled him to adapt.

Therefore this coming season he should be able to hit the ground running and reach his top form, which could prove critical in Tottenham’s season.

I imagine he will play as part of a front three, including Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon, behind a leading striker. Although he may be forced to play a little wider than he did at his time at Schalke, due to the ever-impressive Bale, who at the end of last season seemed to become much more central in his attacking role.

Holtby plays best when he is able to drop into the hole between the midfield and the defensive back line. Here he can find pockets of space to enable him to play that killer final pass with devastating affect for the opposition.

I feel this season we will see him find these pockets of space more often and create chances for the team. I would therefore expect him to hit double figures for assists and could be the catalyst for Tottenham to reach Champions League football, especially if he can build a relationship with the other attacking talent in the team.

He could be the cog in the wheel which Tottenham have been craving to ensure that they can compete for not just a Champions League place but also in their cup competitions.

Overall this article has looked at the increased expectations upon Holtby’s shoulders for the coming season and how he might be able to achieve these expectations.

I feel this pressure of expectation will provide Holtby with the motivation and desire to succeed. Therefore I feel this expectation will make him step up to the plate and perform with style next season.
