Giants of snooker fall in the Wuxi Classic
Only six ranked players remain in the Wuxi Classic following a host of shocks in the second round
After a thrilling day in Wuxi, China only six ranked players remain in the competition.
World number one Neil Robertson, John Higgins, Ali Carter, Mark King, Robert Milkins and Mark Williams are the only big names to make up the list of known players who remain in the competition as well as Asian Tour finalist Joe Perry.
Players sent packing included Chinese sensation Ding Junhui, 21 year-old superstar Jack Lisowski, Barry Hawkins, Stuart Bingham, Marco Fu and Dechawat Poomjaeng.
We also saw former world number one Judd Trump, former World Champion Peter Ebdon, defending champion Ricky Walden and UK Open winner Mark Allen exit the competition.
Current world number two Mark Selby was knocked out in the qualifying rounds, he then decided not to compete in the Bulgarian Open, which was won by John Higgins but made it to the final of the Asian Tour where he was narrowly beaten by Joe Perry.
The competition looks like it may come down to the two heavy weights of John Higgins and Neil Robertson unless more upsets occur in today’s third round.
The classic also had a shock this year when eight time ladies champion Reanne Evans qualified for the final stages, she was then told she had to play the wild card round in order to play 2010 World Champion Neil Robertson but she fell at the first hurdle losing to Zhu Yinghui.
The Classic runs for the rest of the week with the final taking place on Sunday.
