Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney would be a 'fantastic' transfer window signing for Arsenal, according to former Gunners forward John Hartson, who believes the England international is in the same mould as Dennis Bergkamp.
Rooney has been linked with a transfer away from Old Trafford before the deadline in September after handing in a request to leave the club at the end of last season - which was subsequently rejected by Manchester United.
The 27-year-old has been linked with a move to Arsenal, with Gunners shareholder Alisher Usmanov believing Rooney would be a huge success were he to join the north London club.
Hartson has echoed the feelings of Usmanov by himself backing an approach for Rooney, with the former Wales star believing the Manchester United hitman still has his best years head of him.
The ex-Gunner also expects Arsenal fans would welcome Rooney to the club, despite his long-held connection with the club's great rivals Manchester United.
"I think Rooney would be a fantastic signing," Hartson told Goal.com. "He's actually coming into his prime.
"He's only about 27, 28 and you don't play your best football until this stage of your career so, in terms of his experience and everything he's done at Manchester United, I think he would be a brilliant signing and Arsenal fans would welcome him into the side."
Hartson was privileged to play in the same Arsenal side as Dennis Bergkamp during his spell with the club and, in Rooney, sees a player with similar ability to the former Netherlands superstar, who spent 11 glorious years with the Gunners.
"Arsenal fans are used to players like Rooney," Hartson added. "They've had Dennis Bergkamp, Liam Brady, Anders Limpar, they've had great ball players over the years and Rooney would be a magic signing, I'm a big fan of his.
"So, for me, I would just break the bank and go and get Rooney if United will let him go."
