Southampton are reportedly set to complete the capture of highly-rated Celtic midfielder Victor Wanyama before the close of the summer transfer window, despite interest in the Kenya international from Arsenal.

According to talkSPORT, Saints are confident of closing a deal for Wanyama have agreed a deal worth £10 million for the 21-year-old, who has flourished during his two seasons with Celtic.

Claiming the signature of Wanyama would appear to be a significant coup for Southampton, with a number of Premier League clubs having been linked with the Kenyan - the most notable of which has been Arsenal.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was reported to have made an enquiry to asses the availability of Wanyama during the transfer window, while the parents of the player claimed a move to the Emirates Stadium was his first choice.

However, Wanyama's ex-youth coach believes a transfer to Arsenal could prove too much of a step up, and advised his former charge to move to a club of lesser standing before securing a switch to north London.

"He is still young and I have told him he needs to be careful about when he takes the really big step," Jean-Marie Abeels told Sportsmail.

"I think myself that it’s better that he has a step in between before going to the really big level."

The advice of Abeels appears to have been heeded, with Wanyama seemingly set to complete a move to St Mary's.
