Edinson Cavani's imminent departure from Napoli is the worst kept secret currently floating around the footballing world.

The rumours continue to flow and everyone's had their say on the 26-year-old's possible destination next season, whether it be sunny Spain or the not-so sunny England.

Yesterday, Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis stated that Manchester City's owners were unwilling to meet the £54 million release clause in Cavani's contract, giving everyone an insight into the teams that lead the race to sign the Uruguayan.

So what do we know already? We know that Chelsea have shown interest by launching a £45 million bid, according to reports. And we also know that Real Madrid have been in contact over a possible transfer.

There's one thing that's in no doubt at all - Napoli will not budge from the transfer release clause and are waiting to see how Chelsea and Madrid respond.

Chelsea will be weary of such a substantial price tag. We all know they're no strangers when it comes to splashing the cash in this position - the £30 million spent on Andriy Shevchenko and the £50 million paid for Fernando Torres as case in point. Will they have learnt their lesson?

On the other side of this transfer story we have Real Madrid, a club that will almost certainly be losing one of their strikers to an English team, as reports that Gonzalo Higuain is edging ever closer to Arsenal continue to grow.

So will Cavani be the man to fill this void at the Santiago Bernabeu? Reports are that Madrid are waiting until a manager is in place before any transfers can be made, which could give Chelsea the advantage in their pursuit of Napoli's star man.

Despite this transfer being up in the air, there's no doubting Chelsea and Madrid are interested in Cavani, and after 29 league goals in 34 appearances last season, who can blame them?

All we do know is that this is going to be a transfer story that we haven't heard the last of and is likely to rumble on well into the summer.
