Aston Villa may miss out on reported transfer target Luke Murphy to local rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Crewe Alexandra have accepted an offer for the midfielder from the League One club, according to Sky Sports.

Murphy is one of the many talents to come through at Crewe’s famous youth-academy - and his performances for the Alex in League One have the drawn the attention of a range of clubs.

He has made over 200 appearances for Crewe, despite still only being 23 years of age, but it was last season he really came to the fore after he was made captain of Steve Davis' side.

Paul Lambert has been keen to sign young talent during his time at Aston Villa so far and Ashley Westwood has proven to be a valuable addition, after impressing in the Premier League, since the Scot raided Crewe for him last summer.

As a result he was expected to make a bid for Murphy too, but as yet no firm offer has been made.

Wolves, meanwhile, will be looking to add to their squad following their unexpected relegation from the Championship last season and their offer may have alerted a clutch of clubs that they will need to make an offer on the highly-rated prospect sooner rather than later if they don’t want to miss out.
