After an impressive run at the Confederations Cup, Mario Balotelli will not play against Spain in the semi-finals.

The Italian striker who moved from Manchester City to AC Milan earlier in the year, has already bagged two goals in the tournament.

However, we won't see a goal from Italy's frontman at the semi-final stage as he's been ruled out with a leg injury.

The Italian Football Federation explained Balotelli's situation in a statement made on Sunday.

They said: "The examinations carried out this afternoon in Fortaleza on Mario Balotelli showed a grade-one tear in the quadriceps muscle of the left leg.

"The player will not be available for the semi-final against Spain on Thursday, June 27 and in the coming days his condition will be evaluated for the match on the 30th."

If Italy are able to progress past Spain without Balotelli, they will play in the final on the 30th, where Balotelli's presence on the pitch could be as important as it was against Germany at Euro 2012.

If they are unable to make it past the fearsome Spanish team, the Italians will feature in a third-place play-off.

Italian manager, Cesare Prandelli, will need the Italian midfield maestro Andrea Pirlo fit for the semi-final. His absence against Brazil on Saturday was evident as they fell to a 4-2 defeat.

The other semi-final will be played on Wednesday, as home team Brazil take on Uruguay for a place in the final.
