Ex-Arsenal captain Tony Adams has labelled current centre-back Laurent Koscielny as the new Martin Keown.

The French defender was sensational in the final few months of last season as The Gunners made a late march for a Champions League spot, which they eventually got thanks to a Koscielny goal against Newcastle United on the final day of the season.

In the last 10 games of the season, Arsenal won eight and drew two. Not only that, the defence only conceded four times and that was mainly due to Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker.

Not only has Koscielny's performances pleased the Arsenal fans and current staff, they have also pleased club legend Tony Adams.

Adams said that familiarity is the reason behind Koscielny and Mertesacker's improvement in the final stages of last season and he has now labelled Koscielny as the new Martin Keown.

“Koscielny was brilliant [at the end of last season],” Adams told

“He reminds me a lot of Martin Keown. He’s very tenacious. I hate labelling people because Martin Keown was one of the best we’ve ever had.

“But there are similarities there, the way Koscielny marks and his last-ditch tackles.

“He’s tenacious in the tackle. [When it came to] that tight, one-to-one defending, there wasn’t a better player that I’ve played with, [than Keown].

“To put Koscielny in the same category [to Keown] is an enormous compliment I think.”

The Frenchman's impressive form at the end of last season has attracted attention from the likes of Bayern Munich and FC Barcelona, but the 27-year-old has revealed that he wants to stay at the Emirates Stadium.

Adams also had kind words for German giant Per Mertesacker.

“I think he’s a really nice boy and, in a few games at the end of the season, he started to push people around and say “come on!”’ added Adams.

“I think he came out of himself a bit more. He’s a fantastic player.”
