The British and Irish Lions eased to victory in their warm up game, for the second test against Australia, with a 35-0 demolition of the Melbourne Rebels.
Tries from Conor Murray and Sean Maitland in the first-half and Sean O’Brien and Ben Youngs in the second contributed towards the comprehensive victory, in which the Lions were rarely threatened.
It was an impressive display, from what was effectively the Lions second-string, to stop the Rebels from scoring and if they had been more clinical the scoreline could have been even greater.
The Lions started fairly scrappily, but took the lead after their power shone through in the scrum and allowed Murray to take the ball beyond the try-line.
Farrell’s kicking was impeccable until his substitution in the 58th minute, and he duly converted.
It wasn’t much longer before they were further in-front either as in the 28th minute Manu Tuilagi, who did his chances of taking forcing his way into the team for Saturday’s game no harm with his impressive performance, showed his typical pace and power and created the chance for Maitland to score from.
That was how it stayed until the second-half when the Rebels could hold back the tide no longer and O’Brien got in to score.
Ten minutes later, the Lions were awarded a penalty try when Jordy Reid was deemed to have made a foul, earning a yellow card for his troubles, and Farrell’s replacement Stuart Hogg converted to make the score 28-0.
It would have been easy for the Lions to let up now, but they maintained their intensity until the end and scored again in the 73rd minute when Youngs scored a fine try, sprinting onto Tom Croft’s line-out tap-down and Hogg completed the scoring by converting it.
It was a good performance from start to finish by the Lions and the performances of Tuilagi, Dan Lydiate and O’Brien may not be enough to force them into the starting line-up for Saturday, but they should have at least posed some questions over selection for Warren Gatland.
