Football's most prolific goalscoring 'keepers

Published 2 Comments

Iñaki Peña managed to write himself into Barcelona folklore this week despite being at the tender age of only 14, as the teenaged goalkeeper saved six penalties in a shootout, while he also netted the decisive spot-kick himself.

Playing for one of Barcelona's La Masia sides, Peña displayed fantastic ancipatoon to predict correctly six times against Atletico Madrid and demonstrated nerves of steel to successfully dispatch his effort when required.

Taking a penalty is a rarely performed activity by a goalkeeper, and Peña may go the rest of his career without ever being needed to take another spot-kick.

But some shot-stoppers have made their respective names more for their ability from set-pieces rather than their skills between the sticks; scoring more frequently than players utilised in more advanced positions.

They may be rare, but prolific goalkeepers are far from unheard of, with South America in particular having produced a number of glovemen with a penchant for scoring.
