Chelsea have told Napoli to forget about getting the £53.5million release clause for Edinson Cavani, as they will go no higher than £40million.
According to the Daily Star, Jose Mourinho is keen to add Cavani to the signing of Andre Schürrle as the goes about revamping the Stamford Bridge squad.
Napoli are refusing to let the Uruguay striker leave for anything less than his release clause but the report claims Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is prepared to spend that much.
However, the Russian billionaire will sanction a bid in the region of £40million to land Cavani, who the report claims is top of Mourinho’s wanted list.
The 26-year-old appears keen to get a deal done with someone as he recently criticised the buyout clause in his contract, claiming it was too high.
“I don’t think I’m worth £53.5m. I will talk to him about it. I owe a lot to Napoli and I want to leave through the front door if I move on,” he said.
Chelsea may have a battle on their hands to land Cavani, as they are not the only big-spending club being linked with a move for him.
Real Madrid have been credited with an interest, while the player himself has admitted it would be an honour to play for the Santiago Bernabeu club.
Any deal will have to wait for another few days, however, as Cavani is expected to start in Uruguay’s Confederations Cup semi-final clash with hosts Brazil on Wednesday evening.
