Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard expects Spanish goalkeeper Pepe Reina to remain at Anfield next season to fight for his place as Liverpool's number one goalkeeper.
Reina's future has been clouded in the past week as speculation regarding his future intensified following the £9m arrival of Simon Mignolet from Sunderland this week.
Reina claims that he will welcome Mignolet's arrival at Anfield, and Gerrard fully expects Reina to battle to keep the number one spot in the Liverpool goal next season. The goalkeeping jersey is fully up for grabs next season with Reina, Mignolet and Brad Jones all ready to fight for the place in the starting line-up.
"I think who becomes the Liverpool No.1 is going to be Brendan Rodgers' decision," Gerrard told Sky Sports following the signing of Mignolet. "I think he has gone on the record and said he wants to keep Pepe Reina, who is a world class goalie and Mignolet had a fantastic season as well so competition for places is going to be really healthy.
"I is going to be an interesting one, we are going to have to keep our eye on it."
And Gerrard knows that the veteran Spanish keeper is not ready to give up his position without a scrap - and added that the new competition for places will only benefit the club as a whole.
"I know Pepe won't give up the No.1 jersey without a fight," Gerrard added. "I have experienced him in top, top form and I think on his day he's in the top five keepers in the world so it's going to be an interesting one to keep the eye on."
