Manchester United have been dealt a blow in theirs summer pursuit of Cristiano Ronaldo, after Carlo Ancelotti revealed that the Portuguese forward is central to his plans at Real Madrid, reports The Independent.

The 28-year-old has been the subject of intense transfer speculation in recent months, with suggestions that he could leave the Santiago Bernabeu.

A return to Old Trafford has been mooted for Ronaldo, four years after he left Manchester United for Spain in a club-record £80million deal.

New Red Devils boss David Moyes was believed to be considering a big-money bid to bring Ronaldo back to the Premier League, but it now looks as though he'll stay in La Liga after Ancelotti spoke glowingly about the prospect of working with him.

The Italian tactician was full of praise for Ronaldo's contribution to Real Madrid over the past few seasons, and likened him to any of the great players he has had the honour of coaching.

"My opinion is easy. Ronaldo's a fantastic, marvellous player," said the former Paris Saint-Germain boss at his press-conference unveiling on Wednesday. "It's an honour to coach a player like Ronaldo like it was to coach Zidane.

"Ronaldo was not on the list of players like Brazilian Ronaldo, Zidane and Ronaldinho that I coached. He will be on the list of players I coached now and I am so happy for that."
