Arsenal’s record signing Andrey Arshavin has agreed a two-year deal to return to Zenit St Petersburg.

The Gunners paid Zenit somewhere in the region of £15million in 2009 for the then Russia captain in what was hailed as a great transfer coup at the time.

Arshavin burst on to the scene with some incredible displays early in his time at Emirates Stadium, most notably his four-goal showcase in an entertaining 4-4 draw against Liverpool at Anfield.

Another memorable moment for the Gunners attacker was scoring the winning goal in the 2-1 defeat of Barcelona in the Champions League last-16.

However, things eventually turned sour for Arshavin as his was picked less and less in Arsene Wenger’s starting XI and there were criticism from Gunners fans regarding his effort he was putting in.

The Arsenal manager always defended his player but the fact he played only 80 minutes of Premier League football last season indicates the French tactician had long lost faith in the 32-year-old.

Arshavin’s contract expired at the end of the season and he will re-join his boyhood club after they announced a deal had been agreed on the official club website.
