Swansea City set to complete striker signing
Swansea City transfer news: Wilfried Bony's agent confirms his client is close to joining Michael Laudrup's side
Swansea City have this afternoon moved a step closer to improving their squad ahead of their inaugural Europa League by signing Ivorian striker Wilfried Bony from Vitesse Arnhem.
Bony has long been attracting interest from some of Europe's bigger names with Inter Milan being linked with the goalscoring forward during the 2012-2013 campaign.
However it was thought that West Ham United had stolen the race to sign Bony following the season's climax however the club opted for Andy Carroll instead.
Bony's agent Francis Kacou has today spoken to Dutch newspaper De Gelderlander and confirmed that his client had "agreed to leave Vitesse Arnhem to join Swansea City" for a fee of £12million.
This signing is a real mark of intent on Swansea and Michael Laudrup's part after a tumultuous summer thus far with regards to Laudrup's future.
Added to that - the Swans are consciously preparing for life in the Europa League and will hope to improve their squad not only to compete in next season's tournament but to qualify for the tournament the season after.
Bony will add a new physical dimension to Laudrup's forward line with the Swans being accused of being too reliant on Spaniard Michu for large parts of the campaign, especially after the January departure of Danny Graham to Sunderland.
Bony is a strong, powerful centre forward which is a great weapon to have at your disposal in the Premier League, however the Ivorian is also relatively quick and has a fantastic eye for goal which is proven by his tally of 31 league goals last term.
Bony almost single-handedly led Vitesse's title challenge right up until April where the team capitulated however Bony continued to score goals with the Ivorian determined to secure a move away from the GelreDome.
In Michu, Laudrup has a player who is fantastic in two separate positions in the attacking third, Michu can play as a lone striker where he will use his quick feet and skill to carve out chances for himself or he can drop back a small amount and play just off a centre forward almost like an attacking midfield player.
Michu can do this courtesy of his ability on the ball and vision for a pass with the Spaniard's array of passing being used to great effect by Laudrup last season as Michu was often entrusted with the task of feeding quick wingers Nathan Dyer and Roland Lamah in behind.
With the addition of Bony, Swansea can place the Ivorian in the lone forward position with Michu just behind him which will prove to be a far more effective partnership than when Laudrup attempted a similar tactical move with Michu and Graham during the first half of last season.
Michu's pace and skill will thrive off the knockdowns, Bony will win in the air whilst at the same time Michu's vision for a short incisive pass could set Bony free inside the opposition's penalty area.
Whilst we still await confirmation from Swansea City with regards to their move for Bony, a player of Bony's calibre would be a perfect addition to Laudrup's side.
