Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has identified Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso as a priority target as he aims to bring the Premier League trophy back to Stamford Bridge, Sports Direct News claims.
It is understood the 31-year-old is keen to follow the Portuguese manager back to the Premier League after having previously enjoyed a successful spell with Liverpool.
He is out of contract at Madrid at the end of the next campaign, meaning Chelsea could land the Spaniard for a cut-price £7m this summer.
The Special One has suggested the holding midfield role is an area that needs strengthening and he sees Alonso as the answer to the problem.
An agreement could be made for Alonso to join up with Mourinho on a free transfer next season when his contract expires, but Real Madrid's new boss Carlo Ancelotti has also expressed his admiration for the player and may be reluctant to let him go this summer.
Alonso's representatives have been in discussions with Real president Florentino Perez for some time but have still not agreed a deal on a new contract.
